Impressive architecture amidst the mountain world

South Tyrol is not only a paradise for mountain enthusiasts, but also for lovers of architecture. Here you will find numerous exceptional buildings that perfectly blend into the fascinating mountain landscape.

Impressive architecture amidst the mountains

In South Tyrol, nature dominates. Builders have always faced challenges due to the sometimes very difficult terrain. For this reason, the buildings must also be extremely resistant, but still speak a very clear language in order not to disappear in the mighty mountain world. A very impressive example of this is of course the Messner Mountain Museum: The renowned architect Zaha Hadid chose a so-called free-form architecture for the first building, in which the environment and nature play a crucial role. The building then seems to merge with the landscape and fit into the surrounding mountain world.

Perfect Fit

Modern, but completely without kitsch, are also the "Stadele Rooms" in Lana, which appear like a monolith made of concrete and thus become a unique gem. The surface was designed bright and balcony boxes climb up, creating space.

For the Discerning

Particularly discerning guests are drawn to the Gloriette Guesthouse in Ritten, a boutique hotel with a total of 25 suites and rooms. The rooftop spa is particularly spectacular, where you can enjoy the fantastic panorama from the feel-good pool. This building also fits perfectly with the local conditions, with the theme of the arch playing a crucial role. This can be found not only in the wellness area, but also in the restaurant with its adjacent terrace.

In Harmony with Nature

If you are looking for peace and relaxation, a stay at the "Goldene Rose" hotel in Karthaus is recommended. It is a true refuge surrounded by impressive larch forests and three-thousanders. Instead of staring at a screen, the day starts here with a meditation in the hotel's own chapel, and the rooms and suites have been designed so that you can quickly connect with nature inside as well. Wood dominates here, and natural colors have also been used for the walls, which also contribute to making you feel very grounded in this extraordinary place.

Museum of Mountain Photography

Above Bruneck is the Museum of Mountain Photography, called LUMEN, which was implemented by the architect Gerhard Mahlknecht, who turned the former mountain station into a modern museum. The highlight is probably the giant aperture inside the building, which can be opened and closed. When closed, it is used for film projection, and when opened, it offers visitors an unforgettable panorama of the spectacular mountain scenery. Then it's off to the AlpiNN Restaurant, which with its glassed-in terrace is another eye-catcher.
